Hair Loss Overview
Hair loss at any age can be progressive, relentless, and even embarrassing. Luckily, at Texas Facial Aesthetics in Frisco, hair loss treatments are some of our team’s specialties. Dr. Matthew Richardson is fellowship-trained in hair restoration surgery and the non-surgical management of hair loss.
Hair Loss Causes
Hair loss can result from hormones, thyroid disorders, autoimmune problems, infection, medications, and many other causes. Androgenetic hair loss (AGA) is hair loss related to the effects of hormones on the scalp. This is commonly known as “male-pattern baldness,” but women may also be affected.
While female hair loss is not as well understood, the male hormone that causes hair loss on the scalp is a breakdown product of testosterone known as dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The enzyme that produces DHT is blocked by the prescription drug Propecia, which is designed to slow or stop the progression of hair loss, and may even result in increased hair mass.
How Is Hair Loss Diagnosed?
The first step in assessing hair loss treatment options is to perform a thorough history and physical exam. During your consultation, Dr. Richardson will ask about your medical history, any family history of hair loss, the duration of hair loss, what areas are affected, and what other treatments have been tried. A thorough exam of the scalp and hair will then be performed, along with a series of photographs.
Can Stress Cause Hair Loss?
Yes. Stress can trigger larger quantities of hair follicles to enter the resting phase of the hair growth cycle, later resulting in all of those hairs falling out at the same time. In more severe cases, stress can also cause hair pulling or the immune system to attack the hair follicles.
What Are The Treatment Options for Hair Loss?
At Texas Facial Aesthetics, we offer the full range of hair restoration options, including:
- Hair transplantation – Robust hair follicles are removed from the back or side of the head and used to fill in missing patches of hair on the top of the head. The same strategy can also be used to add fullness to the beard or eyebrows.
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) – If missing hair is the result of weakened hair follicles, they can be reinvigorated with injections of the patient’s own PRP. Platelet-rich plasma contains the blood’s regenerative properties.
- Medical management – Medicines like topical minoxidil and oral finasteride (Propecia) could also be great responses to hair loss.
- Nutritional supplements – We use hair supplements from the Viviscal Professional line.
- Specialty hair care products – Shampoos, conditioners, masks, and serums from HairMedica are designed to slow or stop the progression of hair loss.
At What Age Can Hair Loss Begin?
Male-pattern baldness can start after puberty. Women will typically begin to notice hair loss after menopause.
Are Hair Loss Treatments Painful?
Hair transplantation is usually performed with the aid of oral sedation and local anesthesia. Some soreness may occur after any medical hair restoration procedure, but this should gradually subside.
HAIR LOSS PRODUCTS
We have many different options to help clients reach their maximum potential and achieve the results they are looking for. Hair loss affects more than 60% of men and 20% of women. While not all people with hair loss will progress to complete baldness, many will have noticeable thinning.
Hair loss or thinning can result in a lack of confidence and be embarrassing. Even if you aren’t ready to consider a hair transplant or other hair procedures, we have many different products that are simple to use, non-invasive, and can make a real difference in hair quality and hair mass, resulting in a thicker, fuller head of hair.
For instance, we offer nutritional supplements from the Viviscal Professional line (only available from salons, spas, and physicians) and LaserCap laser hair therapy devices for use in our hair restoration practice. We often recommend that patients use these products in conjunction with other treatments such as minoxidil (Rogaine), finasteride (Propecia), PRP, and even hair transplants.
Dr. Richardson can discuss all the various treatment options with you and formulate a personalized treatment regimen to maintain or bring back the hair you desire.
