PRP Hair Restoration
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) has many different applications in medicine. At Texas Facial Aesthetics, we use PRP most commonly for hair loss, but PRP can also be used as part of a microneedling treatment, laser treatment, facelift, or other aesthetic procedures. We most commonly use PRP for hair loss as injections, as a topical treatment in conjunction with a microneedling session on the face, or with laser treatments as a topical application and/or injected treatment.
In hair loss, PRP injections are designed to slow hair loss, increase hair mass, improve the quality and caliber of the existing hair, and are used as part of a comprehensive hair restoration program. We often perform PRP at the same time as a hair transplant, or as a stand-alone outpatient procedure in the office.
PRP is performed in a few simple steps in less than an hour. First, a small amount of blood is drawn from the patient’s arm. This blood is then processed in a centrifuge in order to separate the platelets and other rich growth factors from the rest of the blood. Through a series of steps, these platelets, plasma, and growth factors (“platelet-rich plasma”) are completely isolated and then re-injected or applied to the area of concern, usually the patient’s scalp or the treatment area of a microneedling or laser session. When performed as a stand alone treatment for hair loss, we recommend a series of treatments over the course of 3 months, followed by maintenance treatments every 6 months.
