An upper lip lift is a great option for improving the size of the lips in a subtle and elegant fashion. This technique can be used in younger patients who simply do not have enough upper lip or in older patients who have lost volume in the upper lip or feel as if the distance between their upper lip and their nose has lengthened over time.
Traditional lip lifting techniques involve making an incision along the vermillion border (edge of the pink lip) and excising skin in order to lift the upper lip and show more of the pink portion of the lip. While this technique can work well, this scar is sometimes visible and can occasionally create an irregular or unnatural appearance of the lip border.
Our preferred approach is the Modern Lip Lift where the incision is hidden under the nose along the lip/nose junction. This will shorten the distance between the lip and the nose, resulting in a more youthful appearance and improved definition of the lip border and philtral columns. Patients will often also have increased tooth show, improved pink lip volume, and decreased need for lip fillers. This procedure can be performed under IV sedation or simply local anesthesia, depending on patient preference.
