What is a Lip Lift?
This cosmetic surgical procedure is designed to improve the shape, volume, and overall appearance of the upper lip. It offers a refined, permanent, and natural-looking enhancement, making the lip lift an appealing alternative for those seeking longer-lasting results compared to lip fillers.
Traditional lip lifting techniques involved making an incision along the vermillion border (edge of the pink lip) and excising skin in order to lift the upper lip and show more of the pink portion. While this can work well, the scar is sometimes visible and can occasionally create an irregular or unnatural appearance on the lip border.
Instead, Dr. Richardson and Dr. Cain use the modern lip lift technique, in which the incision is hidden under the nose along the lip/nose junction. This shortens the distance between the lip and the nose, resulting in a more youthful appearance and improved definition of the lip border and philtral columns.
In addition to improving the overall appearance of the lips, patients will often also have:
- Increased tooth show
- Improved pink lip volume
- Decreased need for lip fillers
Good Candidates for a Lip Lift
A lip lift can be great for younger patients who simply do not have enough upper lip. It is also excellent for older patients who have lost volume in the upper lip or feel as if the distance between their upper lip and nose has lengthened over time. Either way, candidates should be in good overall health and free from any medical conditions that could impair healing.
The Modern Lip Lift Procedure
Lip enhancement surgery is performed under IV sedation or local anesthesia, depending on patient preference. Once you are comfortable, Dr. Richardson or Dr. Cain makes a discreet incision hidden under the base of the nose. This allows them to lift the upper lip by removing a small amount of skin and shortening the distance between the nose and the lip. The entire surgery typically lasts about an hour.
The Recovery Process
Most patients can expect some swelling and bruising around the upper lip for the first few days of lip lift recovery. Stitches are usually removed after about a week, and most patients feel comfortable returning to light activities within a few days. Your lip lift surgeon will provide detailed post-operative care instructions to ensure a successful recovery.
