Injectable Lip Fillers

Depending on the areas of concern, injectable hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvéderm, Volbella, Restylane, Restylane Silk, and others can be injected into the lips quickly and easily in the office. The fillers contain lidocaine, a temporary anesthetic that numbs the area to any pain or discomfort. The process is quite convenient and typically takes only 20 minutes or less to perform.

Injections result in immediate improvement that can be visualized right away, unlike various other cosmetic treatments. Patients can return to their day without any need for recovery time. A minor degree of temporary swelling and bruising may be present.

While the results are temporary, fillers in the lips typically last 6-12 months in most patients, and sometimes even longer. After this, patients can return for a maintenance treatment. If a patient is unhappy with their results, results can easily be reversed using an enzyme called hyaluronidase. This enzyme dissolves hyaluronic acid fillers.

Fillers are an extremely popular option because they offer patients a quick and easy way to get beautiful and natural-appearing full lips with minimal down time. The doctors at Texas Facial Aesthetics do not use silicone or permanent lip fillers due to the risk of unsatisfactory results or other problems with these products in the lips.

SMAS Grafts

Finally, SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) grafts can be added to the lips. The SMAS graft is extra tissue that is trimmed away under the skin during a cheek, neck, or facelift procedure. This tissue is usually thrown away, but can be placed back into other areas such as the lips, nasolabial folds, or marionette lines (“smiles lines” or “parentheses”). The advantage of this technique is that this is the patient’s own natural tissue, so there is no risk of rejection. Dr. Richardson’s research on SMAS grafting in the lips was published in JAMA-Facial Plastic Surgery and showed excellent results even at 5 years after surgery, illustrating that this is another essentially permanent option. This research also showed that SMAS grafting to the lips is extremely safe.

Beautiful lips can be a symbol of youth, health, vitality, or sensuality. Like the rest of our bodies, each person’s individual lips shape is unique. Additionally, as we age, the lips tend to lose volume over time. Various techniques can be used to enhance the appearance of the lips. Dr. Richardson and Dr. Cain create custom treatment plans for each patient based on each individual’s desired changes. Some patients are concerned about fine lines along the border of the lips, a lack of definition, or simply a lack of volume.

We offer a number of options for lip enhancement, including injectable lip fillers, lip implants, lip lifting, lip advancement surgery, and SMAS grafts to the lips.

Lip Lifts and Lip Advancement Surgery

Lip lift surgery and lip advancements are ideal for patients who have lost upper-lip volume over time or have a naturally thin upper lip. Like lip implants, these are permanent procedures.

With lip advancement surgery, more of the red portion of the entire upper lip can be visualized, creating the appearance of larger lips. With a lip lift, the central aspect of the upper lip is enhanced.

At the start of either surgery, IV sedation or local anesthesia is administered for patient comfort. While the incision for lip advancement is made along the upper lip’s vermillion border, the incision for a lip lift is instead created along the lip/nose junction. Skin is then removed to shorten the distance between the nose and the upper lip, lifting the lip for a more defined appearance. The incision is sealed using fine sutures.

Recovery time after these procedures is typically around one to two weeks. Temporary swelling is normal at the start of the healing process and fades in time.
