What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a physical exfoliation procedure. It requires the use of a sterile, surgical scalpel to gently “shave” the skin’s surface, removing the top-most layer of dead skin along with fine, vellus hair. It is a great treatment for priming the skin prior to chemical peels or a HydraFacial.
How is dermaplaning performed?
Dermaplaning is performed by a trained skincare professional using a scalpel and a soft touch, scraping the surface of the skin using light feathery strokes.
Is dermaplaning painful?
Dermaplaning is a painless procedure. Most patients find dermaplaning to be very gentle and rather relaxing.
How many treatments of dermaplaning will I need?
Dermaplaning is recommended every 3-4 weeks or as needed for hair removal, exfoliation, or prior to other skincare treatments.
Can I have dermaplaning if I am pregnant?
Dermaplaning can be performed during pregnancy. In fact, it may be a more suitable treatment for pregnancy due to the lighter application of exfoliation for more sensitive skin and removal of extra hair growth that can be caused by hormones.
Are there other contraindications to dermaplaning?
Some contraindications of dermaplaning include current inflammation, cystic acne/pustules, compromised skin, open lesions, or recent facial trauma or surgery.
Is dermaplaning safe for all skin types and colors?
Nearly all skin types can benefit from dermaplaning, as long as there are no active severe pustular or cystic breakouts. People with thin, easily irritated skin should avoid dermaplaning with a peel, which is probably just too much exfoliation.
What is the downtime with dermaplaning?
There is no downtime with dermplaning which makes it a simple and efficient treatment.
What can I expect after dermaplaning?
Immediately following a dermaplaning treatment, your skin will feel incredibly smooth allowing your makeup to glide on perfectly. Your skincare products will also be more effective, since the product isn’t being blocked by dead skin cells and can penetrate the skin faster.
