What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a minimally-invasive physical exfoliation process that is used to remove the dead, outermost layer of skin, revealing underlying new skin cells that are soft and smooth. It can improve the appearance of sun damage, wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, acne scarring, melasma, and other skin-related concerns and conditions. Microdermabrasion increases the effectiveness of skin care products as they are absorbed, and allows them to penetrate deeper into the skin, where they are needed. Microdermabrasion can also be used in conjunction with certain skin peels to help with deeper peel penetration.
How is microdermabrasion performed?
There are various different ways to perform microdermabrasion. For diamond-tipped microdermabrasion (what we most commonly perform), the abrasive tip of the wand is used to physically exfoliate off the surface cells. The exfoliated particles are simultaneously vacuumed away using the same wand. Utilizing a specially designed hand-piece to effectively exfoliate the top layer (epidermis) of your skin, the healthy skin just below the surface is then exposed; creating a fresh, glowing complexion.
Can I do microdermabrasion if I am pregnant?
Yes, microdermabrasion is one of the few treatments that can be performed safely during pregnancy as no chemical agents are involved, simply mechanical exfoliation of the skin surface.
Is microdermabrasion painful?
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive, painless procedure.
How many treatments will I need?
One treatment of microdermabrasion is efficient for instant glowing results; however, to achieve the best results, it is recommended to treat once a month to assure longer-lasting results and continual renewal and exfoliation of skin along with collagen stimulation.
Are there other contraindications to microdermabrasion?
Some contraindications may consist of extremely sensitive skin, active rosacea or acne, sunburn or compromised skin, diabetes, auto-immune disorders, fragile capillaries, or use of Accutane within the past 6 months.
Is microdermabrasion safe for all skin types and colors?
Yes, microdermabrasion can be performed safely on any skin type.
Who is a good candidate to receive Microdermabrasion?
Most all patients are candidates for microdermabrasion. However, we would typically not recommend microdermabrasion for patients with large amounts of skin laxity or significant loss of skin elasticity. We have other aesthetic treatment options that may be better for these patients.
Is microdermabrasion safe?
Yes, microdermabrasion is a safe treatment with minimal risk.
How is microdermabrasion different from dermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion and dermabrasion are two very different treatments. Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive aesthetic skin care service generally performed by an aesthetician that has no downtime and exfoliates the top layer of dead skin cells. Dermabrasion is an invasive treatment performed by a facial plastic surgeon or plastic surgeon that is usually reserved for severe medical conditions like rhinophyma or very hypertrophic, irregular, or deep scars. Dermabrasion requires the use of anesthesia and will create bleeding, raw tissue that can take weeks to heal.
What is the downtime with microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a gentle procedure with no downtime. People love that they can receive this treatment and instantly their skin appears brighter and healthier. Patients (clients) can return to normal activities immediately. Microdermabrasion also smooths out the skin and helps make-up apply much more effectively making it a perfect treatment prior to important events!
What can I expect after microdermabrasion?
Post treatment, you can expect a mild pinkness to the skin (if any at all) which will subside fairly quickly. In the case that skin feels tight or dry, make sure to moisturize! Avoid sun exposure and excessive sweating. You will have immediate softer, more radiant skin … enjoy!
