Microneedling, or collagen induction therapy, is a minimally-invasive skin rejuvenation procedure that involves the use of a device that contains several very fine needles. These needles are used to puncture the skin at various depths to create a controlled skin injury. Each puncture creates channels that stimulate collagen and elastin to fill these tiny wounds.  Microneedling is commonly used as a treatment for skin tightening and to increase overall skin radiance and appearance. Long term skin concerns such as pigmentation issues, fine lines and wrinkles, skin texture, acne scarring, and sun damage can be addressed as well. Microneedling has been safely used in patients of all skin types. While there are several different microneedling devices on the market, SkinPen is the ONLY FDA-approved Class II device for microneedling, which means that the device has passed rigorous testing to demonstrate effectiveness and safety. SkinPen is a medical grade, state-of-the-art microneedling device designed to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and scars on the face. It allows for controlled induction of the skin’s self-repair process by creating thousands of precise micro-injuries in the dermis, automatically triggering new collagen synthesis without causing scar tissue formation. This procedure is performed in-office with little to no recovery time. We typically apply a topical anesthetic to the skin prior to the procedure, which allows for a relatively pain-free experience.

The total healing time depends on each individual patient. Most patients have some slight swelling and redness/pinkness (like a mild sunburn) for two-to-four days. Some patients may heal completely in 24 hours. Patients typically can resume their normal makeup regimen two to three days following the SkinPen® procedure, depending on the area and type of procedure performed.

SkinPen’s variable needle depth allows for maximum versatility, making it safe and effective to use on many parts of the body, including the face, neck and décolletage. The number of procedures required will be determined by your skincare professional based upon your individual procedure goals and the overall health of your skin. Most patients receive a series of three procedures spaced about four weeks apart.

Patients may notice healthier looking skin immediately. However, the natural repair process of your own skin continues to progress through the course of several weeks. Prior skin damage that has occurred over an extensive period of time won’t disappear immediately, and it may take up to six months following your last session to see your final results.

What is microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure that can help minimize the signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles, improve the appearance of acne scars, lighten and correct pigmentation, and rejuvenate the skin for overall more even skin tone and texture.

How is microneedling performed?
Microneedling is a procedure that uses fine needles to puncture the skin and create a controlled skin injury to stimulate collagen and other growth factors in order to rejuvenate skin. The Skin Pen device is the first microneedling device cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, clinically proven to safely and effectively treat and correct skin concerns. These treatments are performed in our relaxed SkinCeuticals Advanced Clinical Spa.

Is microneedling painful?
Microneedling is a minimally-invasive procedure that can be tolerated by most all patients. We apply a medical strength numbing cream for up to 30 minutes prior to the treatment which is effective in reducing or eliminating any discomfort.

How many treatments of microneedling will I need?
In order to most effectively treat and correct skin concerns, we recommend a series of 6 microneedling sessions performed every 4 weeks, so this process can take about six months to totally complete.

Can I do microneedling if I am pregnant?
It is not recommended to receive microneedling treatments while pregnant or nursing.

Are there other contraindications to microneedling?
Common contraindications for microneedling include (but are not limited to) pregnancy, breast feeding, sunburn, irritated or broken skin, herpes virus, laser hair removal photosensitizing medications such as Accutane use within the past 6 months, and use of retinols or at-home acid products within the past 48-72 hours.

Is microneedling safe for all skin types and colors?
Microneedling is not a light-based procedure, nor does it involve harsh techniques that can instigate significant inflammation of the skin. It does not significantly damage the epidermis. For these reasons, microneedling is both safe and effective for every skin type. Furthermore, microneedling is recommended as a safer treatment option for darker skin types in place of stronger laser treatments since microneedling has less risk of causing pigmentation issues.

Who is a candidate to receive microneedling?
Most all patients are good candidates for microneedling. Patients experiencing cystic and active acne/pustules will want to treat the condition before proceeding to microneedling.

Is microneedling safe?
Microneedling is safe when performed by a trained skincare professional.

What is the downtime with microneedling?
Downtime with microneedling is minimal and varies depending on each patient’s reaction and skin type/color. Most patients can expect 3-4 days of total healing time post procedure, but are back to work or school the next day with a small amount of redness to the skin. During this healing period, patients can experience redness, dryness, peeling, rough texture, and mild inflammation. It is recommended to avoid excessive sweating, strenuous exercise, sun exposure, or applying any skincare products, cleansing, and make-up to the skin for 24-48 hours post treatment to avoid an infection to the micro-wounds on the skin.

What can I expect after microneedling?
Most patients describe the immediate post-treatment period as similar to having a sunburn. Clients will experience redness, tightness, and swelling right after treatment that tends to resolve rather quickly. You can also experience some pinpoint bleeding during and immediately after the treatment.
