What is EArlobe Repair? What is Earlobe REduction?

Earlobe repair is a minor surgical procedure that is performed to correct defects in the earlobe, such as a stretched piercing site or an earlobe that is completely torn from an acute trauma, or from long-term wearing of heavy earrings. Earlobe reduction is performed to reduce the overall size of an earlobe for cosmetic reasons.

Is earlobe surgery safe? What are the risks of earlobe surgery?

Earlobe repair and earlobe reduction are very safe procedures. Any surgical procedure that involves making incisions in the skin has inherent risks of bleeding, bruising, infection, and scar formation, but these are all minimal with earlobe surgery.

How is earlobe repair performed? What happens during earlobe repair?

Earlobe repair is typically performed under local anesthesia. An elongated or torn piercing site is usually removed through a wedge-shaped excision of tissue that extends down through the lower border of the earlobe. Sutures are then placed to bring the two portions of the earlobe back together and re-create the lower border of the earlobe. Sutures are also used to close the remaining skin incisions, both on the front and back of the earlobe. An antibiotic ointment is applied and used twice daily for about a week after the procedure.

Am I a good candidate for earlobe surgery?

Earlobe surgery can be safely performed on patients of all ages, genders, and ethnicities.

Earlobe tears and elongated earlobes are extremely common. These problems may occur due to earrings being pulled, trauma, large gauge earrings, or simply stretching of the ear lobes over time. Many people are bothered by the appearance of the ear lobes, and these issues can be easily corrected. Earlobe repair and earlobe reduction are minor procedures that are commonly performed by Dr. Richardson and Dr. Cain. As facial experts, they excel at repairing ear lobes and getting them back to their natural shape and appearance.

Will my ear look different after earlobe repair?

Yes, the elongated or torn piercing site will be removed, and the earlobe may be slightly smaller, but we use advanced surgical techniques to ensure that the earlobe maintains a natural contour with as much symmetry as possible between the two ears.

Is earlobe surgery painful?

No, earlobe surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia, meaning a small amount of anesthetic is injected directly into the earlobe prior to surgery. The injection itself may cause a few seconds of a stinging sensation, but the earlobe is then completely numb during the procedure.

What can I expect after earlobe surgery? What are the downtime and recovery process like after earlobe surgery?

There is essentially no downtime after earlobe repair or reduction. As the procedure is performed under local anesthesia and there is not much pain after the procedure, most patients are able to return to their daily activities, including school or work, on the same day. It is recommended to avoid any heavy lifting or strenuous activity for one week after the procedure to avoid postoperative complications such as bleeding from the surgical site.

Is earlobe surgery permanent? Is the earlobe more likely to tear again after I have an earlobe repair procedure?

Yes, earlobe surgery is permanent. If a new piercing is placed directly in the scar of a previous earlobe repair, then there is some risk that this may tear again, as that scar tissue is not as strong as normal skin. Therefore, when re-piercing the ears the new piercing site should be placed at a location just adjacent to the prior earlobe procedure scar, while also maintaining as much symmetry as possible between the two ears.

How long does it take to see results after earlobe repair or earlobe reduction?

Results of an earlobe repair or reduction are seen immediately after the procedure is complete, but the skin edges of the repair site may initially appear slightly raised and either pink or darker in color. As the scar heals and matures, the skin edges will flatten and the color will fade to more closely resemble the surrounding skin. The earlobe will typically be healed enough to re-pierce the ear at 6 weeks after surgery if the patient desires, and by that time the scar is usually nearly imperceptible.

How much does earlobe surgery cost?

Earlobe surgery cost can vary based on the complexity of the repair or reduction, and whether just one or both ears are being treated. Repair of a simple stretched or torn piercing site may cost between $550-750 per ear, although there is often a slight cost savings if surgery is performed on both ears at the same time. The cost to repair a more complicated earlobe deformity such as that caused by large gauge earrings is usually higher. During your consultation with Dr. Cain or Dr. Richardson, a detailed quote will be provided that is individualized specifically for you based on the doctor’s recommendations.

“10/10 Would Recommend”

“I am so happy I chose Texas Facial Aesthetics! Dr. Cain performed an earlobe repair surgery on me to fix my earlobes from being stretched due to gauging them in high school. It’s clear he takes pride in the work he does. He is so professional, kind, honest, and communicative. He talked to me and kept me informed of every little thing he was doing during the procedure. He stitched them in a way to have as little scarring as possible and after about a month of healing you could barely tell I had surgery at all. He even repierced my ears after the appropriate amount of healing time and I can’t express what it means to me to be able to wear earrings again. The entire staff made me feel welcome, heard, and supported. 10/10 would recommend.” 😊
