What is Forehead REduction Surgery?
If you’ve always felt like your forehead was too large to the point where it upset the balance of your facial features, you may benefit from forehead reduction surgery at Texas Facial Aesthetics. Also called hairline lowering or scalp advancement surgery , this facial procedure can effectively reduce the height of the forehead by bringing down the hairline.
What Is the Procedure Like?
Typically, forehead reduction takes around an hour and a half to complete. At the start of the hairline lowering procedure, local anesthesia and IV sedation are administered to ensure a comfortable and pain-free surgical session. An incision is then made across the hairline; this incision reaches into the temple region. The scalp is lifted from the underlying tissues and carefully advanced forward. Excess skin is removed with the help of a scalpel. Finally, sutures are used to close the incision, which is then dressed.
What Makes Someone a Good Candidate?
If you are a woman who is in good overall health with a dense hairline, no hair loss, no hairline recession, a high hairline, and would like a reduction in forehead size, you are an ideal candidate for this procedure. Candidates need to be non-smokers, since smoking negatively affects skin elasticity, prolongs the healing process, and can lead to poor wound healing, more visible scars, and hair loss.
The best candidates have realistic expectations and the characteristics described above. If you have your heart set on incredibly specific forehead measurements, you may not be a good candidate for a forehead reduction.
Forehead reduction is typically not performed on male patients. This is because hairline thinning and recession occur over time for most men, and for hairline-lowering patients, this would result in exposure to the procedure’s scarring along the hairline.
Some patients prefer to pair their forehead reduction surgery with another procedure. Pairing the brow lift with a forehead reduction is a popular option that offers enhanced benefits. We also commonly perform lip lifts, rhinoplasty, buccal fat reduction, chin augmentation, and face and neck lift procedures in conjunction with hairline lowering.
One-Stage or Multi-Stage
Only a single surgical session is required in many cases. However, this depends on the degree of lowering required. For certain cases, a multi-stage procedure is necessary to achieve the patient’s aesthetic goals.
Multi-stage procedures may involve a tissue expander. This small device is inserted during a surgical session and then gradually filled over six to eight weeks, stretching the overlying tissues. The device is removed during another session, and the hairline is then advanced. Tissue expansion candidates need to live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area due to the risks and frequent follow up visits involved.
Hair-Transplant Hairline Lowering
For some patients who want hairline lowering, hair-transplant forehead reduction may be the better solution. This involves no linear hairline incision. A second hair transplant will be necessary a year later to make sure the hair’s density is optimal. In some cases, patients might even need a third session to achieve the best density. This is a longer process overall than the above-mentioned technique, and usually involves higher expenses, more procedure sessions, and a longer overall recovery period.
It’s also possible to pair both methods of forehead reduction. The forehead reduction incision-based method is performed first, and hair-transplant is then performed six months to a year later in order to camouflage any scars, thicken up areas of thinner hair, and make minor changes to hairline shape as desired.
The Recovery Process
After your forehead reduction surgery, mild swelling and bruising may be present and will fade over time. You will come in for a follow-up appointment in around one week after surgery to have stitches removed and to ensure that your healing process is going as expected.
You will need to avoid physically taxing activities like heavy exercise for two weeks. After this time, you can most likely return to work, although many patients return to work or school at around one week postop.
Once all swelling and bruising has ameliorated and recovery is complete, you will be able to see your final results. Your forehead will be reduced in size to better fit the rest of your facial proportions. The results will be permanent.
The Cost of Forehead Reduction
The price of forehead reduction is impacted by the type of anesthesia chosen, the time required to perform the surgery, the exact techniques used, and many other factors. Generally, the cost of hairline lowering surgery starts at $10,500. We are happy to provide you with a cost estimate. Please call us or email us for more information.
“Look Years Younger”
“Amazingly Smaller Forehead, Look Years Younger. Dr. Richardson is a miracle worker, as far as surgery goes. He took years off my look and bright my hairline forward. It is exactly what I was hoping for, but not sure could be achieved. He really delivered and I’m so thankful I found him and had the surgery. His staff is wonderful as well. I travelled from out of state and they were so helpful. Just an all-around A++”
